MohammedWasn’t the fact that it happened at all an inaicdtion of the mentality which Sultan describes, even though you deplore it?That they didn’t manage to rape her is after a a sustained sexual assault lasting 20-30 minutes is not relevant. It was the attitudes towards the West – and it seems, Jews – typified by assaults on western women that Sultan is writing about. It’s a matter of fact that Egyptian opposition to Mubarak was fueled by Jew-hatred. You only had to listen to vox pop interviews with protesters to hear their repeated complaints that Mubarak supported Israel and the US to know that. Their were not censored in any way although the mainstream media chose to ignore the comments, probably because most of them agree with the protesters. The vicious persecution of Coptic Christians by their Muslim neighbours is also a matter of public record, rarely reported by the mainstream media but attested to by their representative and by Christian organisations who support them.It was encouraging that some Egyptians came out in support of Christian minorities after persecution earlier this year. But that was only after decades of kidnaps and forced marriages of Christian women, destruction of Christian property, murders of Christian workers and all with the connivance of the Egyptian police.I hope – with you, I’m sure – that Egypt passes into a phase of stable government where people desire to live at peace with their minority and Jewish neighbours. But I have serious doubts that it will happen. Time will tell.
